When you imagine seeing your partner for the first time on your wedding day, you might picture walking down the aisle while everyone watches. It’s a beautiful tradition — but it’s not the only way.
More and more couples are choosing to do a first look: a private moment where the bride and groom (or partners) see each other before the ceremony. As a wedding photographer, I’ve witnessed firsthand how emotional, meaningful, and practical this moment can be.
If you’re on the fence about it, here are a few reasons why you might want to consider a first look.
1. It calms your nerves
Wedding mornings can be full of butterflies. Seeing your partner early in the day can help ease the tension, bring comfort, and remind you why you're doing this in the first place. It’s a chance to breathe, hug, and feel grounded before the ceremony begins.
2. It’s a private, emotional moment
On a day where you'll constantly be surrounded by guests, this might be your only real moment alone together. Many couples find this to be one of the most emotional parts of the day — full of tears, laughter, and heartfelt reactions. And because no one’s watching, it feels more genuine.
3. It makes your timeline smoother
From a planning perspective, first looks help a lot. By doing couple portraits before the ceremony, you free up more time afterward to enjoy cocktail hour with your guests. You can also get family and bridal party photos done earlier, leaving more room for fun later.

Doing a first look gives us more time and flexibility to create beautiful, relaxed portraits in the best lighting — without the pressure of rushing back to your guests. It also means we can capture both your reactions in detail, instead of just one from the ceremony aisle.

Some couples worry that a first look will “spoil” the moment of walking down the aisle. But in reality, it often makes it even more powerful. You’ve already shared your tears and excitement in private — so by the time the ceremony comes, you're fully present and can just enjoy it.
